Having a talk with your elderly parents about a new living situation is no easy task. For one, they are used to making all the decisions, and, two, you don't know how they will react - they may resist wanting to talk about it altogether. When you are ready to have the discussion regarding assisted living with your parents because you know it would help them with their day-to-day living, preparing for it can help things go smoother.

Do your research

You want to have as much information as possible to talk options over with your parent or parents. This will help keep the conversation more productive. Plus, you don't want to make them feel like you have already decided for them.

Express your concerns

Be prepared with a list of your concerns, whether it's a fear of your loved one being alone and falling or missing their bills or medication. As you communicate with them, be empathetic. Do the best you can to ensure they know you care and speak slowly, calmly, and respectfully.

Ask about their concerns

Ask open-ended questions so they have a chance to raise their concerns. Some of these questions may help them think about things they had not thought of before. It can help them begin to understand your concerns and see the reality behind the risk of living at home alone. Some questions you can ask include:

  • Do you feel safe being at home alone?

  • Do you feel stressed keeping up with the house?

  • Do you have problems getting around, such as using the stairs or getting in the bathtub?

  • Are you lonely?

Be patient

Accept that this will not be the only conversation you have about this. If things become heated or overly emotional, take a break and offer to discuss it again later. Even though this will be a practical and helpful next step for them, ensure you acknowledge how difficult this is for them and remain patient and supportive throughout the entire process.
